2003 Spring Break on Edisto Island

Every April the kids get a week off from school, so we try to make the most of it and head somewhere South. We’ve spent the last three Spring Breaks on Hunting Island, just south of Hilton Head. It’s such an absolutely incredible place, so incredible that we were really hesitant to give it up for somewhere new. Why give up a sure thing? However, our spirit of adventure and desire to explore new places won out, and we decided to try Edisto Island, another one of South Carolina’s pristine coastal islands.

Edisto had just what we were looking for: a State Park campground right on the beach and hiking and biking trails through forests and salt marshes. The thought of palmetto trees swaying in the warm sea breeze and biking through forests of old oak trees draped in Spanish moss was very appealing.

Also, once again we were joined by our friends the Hubers, who had vacationed with us numerous times in the past and were still willing to come back for more. Their two children were very close in age to our boys, so their company always added so much to the fun of our trips.

This was quite the social trip for us. On the way home, we planned to stop in Virginia Beach for two nights to visit another set of friends who had recently moved there. They also had two boys about the same age as ours.

This had all the makings of a very good trip.
